Keywords: Ecology, food web
Subject(s): Science
Grades P-K through 5
School: East Valley Elementary School, Marietta, GA
Planned By: Karen Kraeger
Original Author: Karen Kraeger, Marietta
Objective: Students will investigate food webs and classify organisms into different roles within the food web. Students will also be able to construct a food web with photographs that they have taken.

Students will view a video, "Magic School Bus Gets Eaten," to learn the parts of a food chain. Class discussion about the parts of a food chain will follow, with the students working in partners to a food web diagram.

After that, students will work with a partner to capture photos of organisms that are part of a food web. Students will take the photos outside at the school.

After photos are taken, they will be printed out to allow the students to organize them into food webs that exist in the local ecosystem. Food webs will be constructed on posters to be displayed in the classroom.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This could very easily incorporate a writing piece with students explaining the elements and relationships within their food web.
Follow-Up
Additional writing piece: What would happen if one of the elements in the food web changed?
Materials: Point and Shoot, Flash/USB Drives
