Keywords: writing, puzzle, photos, art, panorama, pictures, projects
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Art, Technology, Photography
Grades 2 through 5
School: Westridge Middle School, Orlando, FL
Planned By: Linda Arline
Original Author: Linda Arline, Orlando
Objectives: Students will create a montage picture using photos incorporated into a picture that will be used to create a puzzle.
Materials: 11" x 20" heavy white cardboard. 3 photos- take 3 separate shots - one center, turn slightly to right to include some of the center shot, turn left from the center shot to get only part of the center shot - the 3 when layed together create a panorama view, scissors, glue, colored pencils or thin markers, X-Acto knife, stickers, other picture cut-outs, magazine pictures, or "paper doll" characters.
Instruction: Teacher will questions students used of digital camera and demonstrate proper use of camera. Teacher will brainstorm with students to determine areas for panorama pictures to be taken. After student pictures are developed, teacher will assist students in placing the pictures into the montage on the white paper and secure the pictures with glue. (Allow sufficient time for drying). Students will enhance the photos by creating a background to go with the pictures using colored pencils, markers, additional pictures, stickers or other enhancements. Students will cover the entire 11" x 20" paper. Allow enough time for all enhancements and color to dry.

Using a ruler and pencil, students will draw lines on the back of the white cardboard dividing the picture into pieces (the smaller the pieces the harder the puzzle). The teacher (or under supervision) using a ruler and X-Acto knife, cut the lines to create puzzle pieces. Laminate pieces to perserve for longer use.

Student will use this to introduce themselves to new Pen Pals and write a letter of introduction to be mailed with their Picture Puzzle.
