Grades 9 through 12
School: Swansea High School, Swansea, SC
Planned By: Emily Taylor
Original Author: Emily Taylor, Swansea
Our media center, literacy coach and the English Department would like to work together to create a series of large, colorful posters to encourage reading on our campus. Each poster will show a student and a book that they have enjoyed reading in poses throughout our school campus and community. Text will be added as well as artistic manipulations in Tool Factory software. These posters will be hung throughout the high school, as well as at the elementary and middle schools in our district.

Procedures:
1. Students will read a book for pleasure.
2. Students will learn how to use digital cameras, scanners, printers, and Tool Factory Software in the classroom.
3. Students will be sent out with a partner to photograph each other with their books. They can choose areas of campus like the football stadium, the gym, the cafeteria, or areas of the community like the playground, or their worksite. They will be encouraged to use props like uniforms.
3. They will then present their book and their posters to the class.

Standards:
Standard E1-1
The student will read and comprehend a variety of literary texts in print and nonprint formats.
Standard E1-2
The student will read and comprehend a variety of informational texts in print and nonprint formats.
Standard E1-3
The student will use word analysis and vocabulary strategies to read fluently.
Standard E1-4
The student will create written work that has a clear focus, sufficient detail, coherent organization, effective use of voice, and correct use of the conventions of written Standard American English.
Standard E1-5
The student will write for a variety of purposes and audiences.

Students will encourage other students on campus and younger students to see that being involved with reading is “cool” and fun. Students will also see several departments work across the curriculum with the media center to create a worthwhile project that will encourage students on all grade levels and from many different backgrounds to continue to read. This project will help integrate our school-wide literacy goals into the curriculum.
