Keywords: hermit crabs, science, ocean life
Subject(s): Science, Art, Technology
Grades K through 3
School: Nettleton Primary School, Nettleton, MS
Planned By: Jessica Alred
Original Author: Jessica Alred, Nettleton
The teacher will read, A House for Hermit Crab, by Eric Carle.
The students will be introduced to a hermit crab for a classroom pet. They will color and decorate a hermit crab coloring sheet in any way they choose. The students will complete a concept map detailing elements from the story. The concept map will be completed using the ActivBoard and its software. Since my class is so small, the students will choose two sea creatures to research. (With a larger class, students can be assigned to groups to research a sea creature.) The students (with my help) will conduct Web Quests on the creatures they choose. The students must find two to three interesting facts on the creatures. The students will also find pictures of the creatures during their research. All information and pictures will be brought together to create a PowerPoint presentation. (One picture and one fact per slide....my class' presentation will have about 8 slides, counting title slide and reference slide). The students can present the presentation at a PTO meeting or to their classmates at each grade level (K-3).

Pictures will be taken and added to the classroom album as the project is being conducted. All information and pictures can be saved to a flash drive as students will be working from different computers.

Follow-Up
The students will make hermit crab arts and crafts after the research and PowerPoint are completed.
