Special Preparation Necessary:
·Book: “Head to Toe” by Eric Carle
·Big Mac switch with the phrase: “It’s time to turn the page.”
·Big Mac switch with the repetitive phrase from book: “I can do it.”
·Page fluffers on the book pages
·Shoe box with 1 picture of each of the following animals: penguin, giraffe, buffalo, monkey, seal, gorilla, cat, crocodile, camel, donkey, elephant, boy
Activities:
·Introduction of book to students.
·Look through book talking about pictures and what they are doing in the pictures.
·During the 2nd reading, read through the book pointing to the words.
·After 2nd reading have the students pick an animal card out of shoe box and act out
·Instructional assistant take pictures of students acting out actions. (The end goal is to have 1 picture of each student acting out 9 actions – to be used in a writing lesson later in the week)
Instructional Methods:
·Point to words as read them
·Point to pictures and reinforce actions taken by characters---model actions
·Model reading repetitive phrase using Big Mac Switch as you read through the book
·Have each student draw an animal picture out of a shoe box
-Model turning pages as looking for that animal to find what action we need to imitate.
-Have target student turn pages to look for animal drawn out of shoe box to look up action to imitate – use physical prompting at the elbow if help is needed.
Prompts:
·Use verbal prompts after 15 seconds of wait time
·If no response after verbal prompting, use gestural prompts after 10 seconds of wait time.
Environmental Arrangements:
Students will be at a kidney shaped table in the classroom. Each student will be sitting in a classroom chair or wheelchair (whichever is appropriate to maximize their participation).
Evaluation of Learning:
Observation will be used to gather information necessary to determine student ability to turn pages and utilize switches appropriately. Observations will be recorded on data sheet.
