Grade P-K
School: St Paul's School for Girls, Brooklandvl, MD

Original Author: Donny Yankellow, Brooklandvl
Students are shown the artwork of photographer Howard Greenberg (www.greenbergsgarage.com). A discussion about his artwork and how his photographs are about "anything." His subject matter can be anything, it is the way he crops the image and edits it that turns "nothing" into a great photo.

Students are sent out on campus to take photographs of anything they find interesting.

Students return and a discussion/demonstration of using the basic editing tools in iPhoto occurs. Cropping, brightness/contrast, saturation, and exposure are discussed. Achieving the blackest black and whitest white in an image is stressed and the "Rule of Thirds" as a way to have a center of interest is discussed.

Students return to the computers and start editing their photos using the techniques demonstrated. Creative cropping is encouraged.

Assignment: Students are required to hand in three printed images by the end of the week (four meeting periods). They are allowed to reshoot photos, if needed.

Follow-Up
Students continue building there skills in the next project.
