After students have has lessons on what the sources of energy are, take the class on a trip around the school. Put students into pairs or small groups, depending on the number of cameras avaliable and start in the classroom. Each group needs a camera, a clipboard, a pencil and a recording sheet. While still in the classroom have students identify a source of energy and take a picture of it. The teacher should check each group to be sure they have properly taken a picture and recorded it on their sheet. Take a walk around the school, stopping periodically to allow groups to identify energy sources, take pictures and record findings. Also, go out side to find energy sources in nature.
Back in the classroom, have students discuss the types of energy sources. If able, connect cameras to a computer or projector so that groups can share some of the favorite/most unique findings. Print out a few pictures from each group to assist in teaching for the rest of the unit or to use as a sorting activity for different types of energy.
Follow-Up
Use pictures to make a sorting activity for different sources of energy.
