A Want Ad Directions:

Why do we need to write? To communicate, of course. But communication of information can be interesting by using a different form. Take Want Ads. They tell you what people want to buy or rent or ?????? Hmmmm. Read the want ad below --- could you apply for this job?

Wanted

Diligent and independent workers with a sense of humor willing to add spice to daily journeys into the unknown. Must bring own tools (pens, pencils, paper, ideas, stories, poems, wonderful words) the use of which may answer a question, solve a problem, or entertain a friend. Must be open to new ideas and strategies that will bring improvement to the whole process and journey. Most importantly, must demonstrate collaborative abilities in working with people. If you have a smile on your face, a quick joke to lighten the day, a hand open to work with others, an independent streak to focus and follow-through, then please apply at 555-4541 for a joyous journey into writing.

Now try a reflective and fun ad on your own topic, such as skateboarding, txting, hoops, etc.?

Lesson Goals

Overview

This project shows how well you can transform ideas into a different form/genre/mode of writing:
* We can brainstorm/prewrite knowledge about a person, yourself, a topic
* Rather than simply write a paragraph or summary, we can create a Want Ad that includes clear, specific information using the terminology of a Want Ad
* Collaborate with others to critique and revise for best ideas and word choice

Objectives

This project should demonstrate that you can:
* Gather and organize ideas
* Choose appropriate, interesting, styled words that fit the topic (your choice) and the form (Want Ad)
* Allow feedback/revisions from others to revise the Want Ads

Assignment 1

Create a WANT AD about yourself. Be precise and detailed. Keep asking yourself, What else? What else?

Be prepared to share in some way in class (read all of it; share a part; let someone else share it with the class).

Keep your drafts on the Fun Ad Project Wiki Page. We'll watch them improve as you change them, and as your peers offer praise and suggestions.

What to include:

clear ideas
logical order
words that whistle about you--show who you are
words specific to a Want Ad

Assignment 2

Create a WANT AD on a topic of your choice. Be precise and detailed. Keep asking yourself, What else? What else?

Be prepared to share in some way in class (read all of it; share a part; let someone else share it with the class).

Keep your drafts on the Fun Ad Project Page. We'll watch them improve as you change them, and as your peers offer praise and suggestions.

WANTED

New pencils. Number 2. Multi-colored or Golden Yellow. Must be filled with imagination, stories, and reports revealed by sharp points easily flowing onto any kind of paper as soon as the graphite grabs the page. Ideas must be detailed and descriptive, defined by deciding the best fit for the phrase by an ever-pink eraser that immediately knows which words to wipe away. Apply sharpened and ready to write at my desk before 9:00 AM Monday morning.
