Grades 1 through 6
School: Larkspur Elementary School, Larkspur, CO
Planned By: Carol Katona
Original Author: Carol Katona, Larkspur
Each student is put in one of four groups, 5-7 per group. When given instruction they then put themselves in alphabetical order according to their last name, as quickly as possible. When this is accomplished they will each be handed a facsimile of a spine of a book which has a call number on it. Working as a team each student arranges themselves in call number order as if they are a book on a shelf. You can do this using fiction or nonfiction call numbers. The team or group that completes the task first, correctly, is the winner and gets to check out their books from the library first. I also use other prize incentives such as bookmarks, pencils, etc. What a great way for students to understand how books in a library are arranged by call numbers!!
