Lesson Sequence:

Students are beginning a new chapter in science. They will use their science textbooks, index cards in students’ cases, pencil. Students will be instructed to write down the new vocabulary words on index cards. Each word will go on its own card. They will then look up each word in the textbook glossary. When the students have written down all the words and their definitions, they will go over them with a peer tutor. Then, they will alphabetize the cards and put them in their card cases. Each card will be filed alphabetically by letter. Students will be reminded to use the cards as a study guide.

As an additional modification for the ELL students, they will also be given a page of pictures of the words. They will cut out the pictures and use a glue stick to put each picture on the definition card that matches the picture. The teacher will put the ELLs in a small group setting so that they can work more one-on-one. The teacher will also have a Spanish/English glossary so that if students don’t understand the context vocabulary and pictures, they will be able to use the Spanish glossary as a back-up.

Teacher will also pronounce each word and ask ELLs to repeat word. Careful attention will be paid to pronunciation and extra letters that aren’t sounded.

For example:

Front of the card: Back of the card:

>

Whenall the words have been copied, students will file their words but before putting them away, they will pronounce each word correctly for the teacher. Teacher will read the definition again and ask if there are any questions or misunderstandings.

Note: If you should choose to modify an existing lesson you must identify the original source of your activity and describe how you have modified the resource to make it uniquely your own. Citations should be done in either APA or MLA format. Consult the Citation Maker tool in Recipes4Success under the Curriculum Resources link in IDEAL for further guidance.

Comments
A short, but necessary lesson plan. New vocabulary for each chapter gives students a KWL basis for starting their work. Vocabulary can be used as a KWL and also used later as a study guide.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students could take the cards with them to Art class and sketch their own pictures of the words. Students could use the cards in math class to demonstrate exponential notation (i.e., closest galaxy (Andromeda) is how far away?
Follow-Up
Cards could be brought out and used (student-to-student) as "game". Students could ask each other vocabulary words and points could be given to students who know the correct spelling, definition, etc.
