On the first of each month review the highlights all of the activities in your classroom. Write a list of these on the board and then every student writes their own page on what they enjoyed, learned and experienced the previous month. Then edit each child's page and they recopy it onto monthly themed stationary.Their pages are then glued onto construction paper. You can either use large 12 x 18 construction paper and glue the written page on one side and the pictures on the other or use 8 1/2 x 11 paper and put photos on one side and written pages on the other.
Throughout the month the students will photograph activities in the classroom as well as in specials classes, assemblies and field trips. They can then print the pictures and cut them out and glue them onto their monthly summary page. You can then laminate this page.
Summarize each month throughout the year. Finally at the end of the year create covers together. I also enjoy making an autograph page to use the last week of school. All of these pages are then bound together as a summary of each student's year.
Comments
I vary the amount of technology that the students use for this project depending on the skills of my students each year and the hardware that I have available.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This is a great way to summarize all of the subject areas for each month.
Follow-Up
You can teach photography skills to your class at the beginning of the year. This is a great time to bring in outside resources from the community whether it is a parent or someone from a camera shop to help the students learn to use the cameras to the best of their abilites. We have also had authors come to our school who talk about focusing on important details which helps them write about the "important " events of the previous month.
