2. Decide what your topic is according to the Science Teks for the particular time period. (For example: parts of a tree)
3. Take a nature walk with your students during your Science time block. Make sure to take pictures that correspond with your lesson with a digital camera.
4. Download your pictures to the computer.
5. Open Photo Story and click begin a new story. Import the pictures that you have taken for the lesson. Optional: Type text that you would like to add to the picture. Ex.) Our tree has branches. Optional: Record student(s) voice reading the text, talking about the picture(s), or singing a song. Select background music from within the photo story or from your own selections saved on your computer. Finally save your photo story.
6. Project your student's creations during Science night or post to your school web page.
6. Congratulations! You have just created a photo story to help your students learn the parts of a tree in an exciting way.
Comments
Teachers can choose to do this as one whole group production or have each student create their own. Kinder and 1st grade should probably think about doing this lesson as a whole class production.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students are learning about trees, their needs and their parts, and how they work together as a system in Science. Students are able to integrate technology, english/language arts, and writing by creating their Photo Stories.
Follow-Up
Have students draw a tree and label it’s parts in their science journals.
Student's can sing the parts of the tree song (to the tune "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" and record themselves with voice recorders. Student's can listen to themselves on MP3 players to review the parts of the tree.
