*Before beginning the project discuss permissions with the administration since students may be filming inside the school, or leaving school to videotape local areas for their project. However, this is not necessary to complete the project.

Materials needed: Handout explaining procedures and deadlines, digital video camera, digital camera, computer with movie making software and Internet.


1. Students are provided with an explanation of the project which includes steps and deadlines.
2. Students are given an explanation of how to use windows movie maker, windvd, or other movie making software.
3. Students are grouped cooperatively and given time to research and discuss possible topics for a docementary that would be relevent to their area. For example forest fires, town renovations, community organizations, parks, etc.
4. After a topic is selected students must research it extensively.
5. After research is compiled students plan out their film on a story board including what will be filmed and narration.
6. Students will film and take pictures for their documentary.
7. Students will upload film and pictures, edit film, and include narration and music.
8. Students will present their film to the class and/or at another public forum.

Time: Usually this project needs 3-4 weeks to complete.

Standards include: Research, Writing, Speaking, Presenting,
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Documentaries can focus on Science or Social Studies topics.
Follow-Up
Review audience response to videos.
Materials: DVD Camcorder, Point and Shoot, Projectors, Microphones, Video Tools, Hard Drives, Camera/Video Accessories, Word Processor, Art Tools
