You may want to begin by bringing in a few personal, meaningful items and asking students what they think the items are. Have students brainstorm possible ideas. After 2-3 min., tell students what the items are and what they mean to you. Explain that they will be doing a similar activity via a collage, where they will be asked to take digital pix of a variety of topics (ex. family members, pets, favorites, goals, accomplishments, etc.). They will create an eye-appealing collage with the pictures, explaining what is depicted and why it's important to them. Encourage students to be creative-- maybe they have scrap booking materials, glitter pens, fun scissors, or something unique to make their collage stand out. After students print pictures, have them plan out their arrangement before they glue anything down. Then either hand-write explanations next to pictures or type up explanations and glue next to pictures. When everyone is finished, present in class. This is a fun way to get to know your new students, and they enjoy learning about you as well!
