Keywords: digital photography
Subject(s): Art
Grades K through 3
School: East Carter R2 Middle School, Ellsinore, MO
Planned By: Mary Jo Bell
Original Author: Mary Jo Bell, Ellsinore
Students will learn the about the basic art elements and photography at
http://www.ecarter.k12.mo.us/dept/art/photovideo.html
and
at
http://www.ecarter.k12.mo.us/dept/art/elements&principles.html
Students
will then be divided into groups of 5 or 6 and assigned a specific element--line, shape, color, space, texture, or form. Next, students will see short videos
http://www.ecarter.k12.mo.us/dept/art/artvideos.html that feature their element.
Students will be given a demonstration and instructed on how to take pictures using digital cameras. Since students are already divided in groups, have them discuss with their other group members where some good places to look for their assigned element on the playground. Students and the teacher will then go outside to the playground to look for things that demonstrate their art element. Students will take at least 5 pictures that demonstrate their element. (I've tried this lesson with 1st grade and it worked great, one thing that really helped is a color code system and a list of examples for the group leader. I also gave each group a specific colored string to hold on to so that their group stayed together by holding the string.)After taking the photographs, I downloaded and printed each groups pictures into a folder so that they could all look at them and claim their own. I also displayed them all on a powerpoint presentation and then selected differnt ones for our art web page. Great results and even some winners at a local contest!
Comments
I had only 5 mini digital cameras for students to share and students did a great job. I can only imagine what it would be like to have good digital cameras for the students to use.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students can also write descriptions about their photography--especially describing words.
