Keywords: chemistry, safety, glassware
Subject(s): Chemistry
Grades 10 through 12
School: South Fork High School, Stuart, FL
Planned By: Donna Fitzpatrick
Original Author: Donna Fitzpatrick, Stuart
Many pieces of laboratory equipment are difficult to demonstrate in a manner that the whole class can see. The use and reading of pipets, burets, volumetric flasks, pipet bulbs and pumps, an analytical balance, and a micropipettor will be videotaped using a flip camera and the videos will be shown on the SmartBoard so that all students can adequately see how to read a menicus and use the glassware. Chemistry demonstrations that must be done in a fume hood, including the carbon tower reaction of sugar with concentrated sulfuric acid, will be recorded so that students can see them larger than life.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Have students write their observations to enhance writing skills.
Follow-Up
Use the demonstrated laboratory equipment in experiments.
Materials: Flip Video, Tripods
