Lesson Summary: The students will discuss their favorite holidays. Then they will take a class survey to determine which holiday; Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter, the class liked best. The students will create a column graph on paper. Then the students will enter this data into a spreadsheet and create a column graph to display this data. Using the column graph, the students will analyze the data and answer Think Sheet questions.

By the end of this lesson, the students will: Tennessee Curriculum Standard
Be able to read and interpret data in a column graph Content Standard 5.0 The student will understand and apply basic statistical and probability concepts in order to organize and analyze data and to make predictions and conjectures.

 Graph  Microsoft Excel  The students will enter the holiday survey data into a spreadsheet and create a column graph that displays this data.


SPECIFY PROBLEM
What is your favorite holiday? What do you think our class’s favorite holiday is? Today, we are going to discuss our favorite holidays. We are going to take a class survey to find out which holiday, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter is liked the best by our class. Then we are going to take the results and enter the numbers into a spreadsheet and create a column graph on the computer that will display the results of our favorite holiday survey.

RESULTS PRESENTATION
The students will create a column graph that displays the results of the class’s favorite holiday survey. They will read and analyze the data in the column graph and answer Think Sheet questions about the data.

TEACHER ACTIVITIES BEFORE LESSON
The teacher will have:
1. Chosen four holidays
2. Created an example of a column graph
3. Opened the spreadsheet template on the computer

STUDENT COMPUTER ACTIVITIES
Activity 1
Activities to be completed:
-Prior to going to the computer, the students will participate in the class favorite holidays survey. Using the results of this survey, the students will create a paper column graph to display the data.
- At the computer, the students will enter the favorite holidays data into a spreadsheet template and then create a column graph.
- After going to computer,
The students will take a copy of the column graph to their desks and read and analyze the data to answer Think Sheet questions.
