The Warrior Project
2010-2011

The Warrior Project is a year-long project focused on you, your community and the impact that you have on each other. This project is meant to enrich your life by preparing you for the demands and interactions facing you as an adult, as well as enriching the lives of others by those interactions. This project is yours and will only be what you make of it. It can be as big or as little as you make it as long as the requirements are met.

This is your chance to get to know yourself a little bit better, enhance the life of someone else and prepare yourself for the world outside of Warrenton High School.

Requirements

Volunteer:
• You will be required to complete at least 10 hours of volunteer service in your local community. These hours should not involve a job you are already hired to do and should not involve any monetary compensation (baked goods are ok to accept as payment).
• You may volunteer with a partner or friend but each of you are still responsible for individual completion of all Project requirements.
• You will need someone, a mentor, at your volunteer site to sign off on your hours.
• Hours above and beyond the requirements will be eligible for extra credit approval

Record:
Please keep a record of the following things throughout your volunteer time:
• Volunteer hours recorded on Project Time Sheet
• Keep a journal of your experiences. Make an entry after each visit to your volunteer site and include names of people you have met, special experiences, funny situations, stories someone may have shared with you, what kind of work you are doing, uncomfortable or awkward situations and how you handled them, etc.
• This journal will aid you in completing your final 2-4 page reflection on your volunteer time.

• Any pictures, videos, projects, letters, notes or any other visual item you could share in your final presentation.

Present:
• Your reflection will then be turned into an oral presentation for your peers and some faculty and/or community members. You may also wish to invite your volunteer mentor, parents, or other meaningful people to this presentation.
• This should be 7-15 minutes in length and should include an account of your experience, what you learned, and a visual representation.

Making it happen:

1st Qtr:
-Volunteer site and mentor confirmed
-Begin volunteering and recording in journal

2nd Qtr:
-Continue to volunteer and record information

3rd Qtr:
-Complete mandatory volunteer hours (continue on for extra credit and personal enjoyment)
-Complete Reflection Essay

4th Qtr:
-Prepare and present oral presentation

materials needed: digital cameras for documentation, journals for volunteer entries, presentation materials will vary.
Comments
This project would benefit from digital cameras, flip cams, and a laptop and projector for presentations.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This project could work independently or with other service projects. It would also fit in well with a speech class.
Follow-Up
Invite community members and parents to view final presentations. Open doors for next year's students.
