Keywords: Writing and Technology skills mingled
Subject(s): Technology, Writing, English/Language Arts
Grades 3 through 4
School: Spencer Elementary School, Spencer, WV
Planned By: Tina Riley
Original Author: Tina Riley, Spencer
Students will:
1. Create a self-written book using correct punctuation, capitalization, and grammer for reading to younger students in our school. (The teacher may have each student create their own book or work in small groups to share ideas and use as a peer teaching station for writing skills.
2. Once the book is complete and has met the teachers standards, the student will be videotaped using a flip camera. The video clip will be transfered to a file on the teachers computer for burning to CD.
3. The completed CD will become a Digital Storybook Library for Pre-K through Grade 2 students available to all teachers in our school.
4. We are hoping students will get excited and create their own illustrations to be viewed during the reading aloud process for videotaping. Students will be permitted to draw or have someone else help with the illustrations. We believe we can also promote an understanding of copyright issues using this method.
5. Students will learn (through training periods) how to transfer the video files from the flip camera to the computer and how to burn a CD of those files from a computer.

The purpose of this project is to promote writing skills which will help with the basic skills of reading and writing appropriate for each grade level, but also get younger students excited about one day writing their own book to be used in the same manner. This would be an ongoing project to submit books to our digital library.
I would like to get enough flip cameras to have one in each classroom. We have eight classrooms total for the third and fourth grade classrooms.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
1. Ask primary level teachers about preparing specific writing prompts for the older students to create items which go together with their specific lesson or subject areas. Example, we study the lifecycle of the pumpkin. Can a student write a story about a pumpkin growing up?
Follow-Up
1. Teachers will promote the continuation of the project with students submitting new books and preparing them for the video library.
2. Teachers can set stages of development for students previously submitting a written work. Criteria may include, grade level vocabulary appropriateness, lengthen or shorten writings for a specific grade level, etc.
