School: Bethel Elementary School, Simpsonville, SC
Planned By: Julianne Kaye
Original Author: Julianne Kaye, Simpsonville
This is a four lesson collaborative unit with the 4th grade teachers and the school media specialist.

The first lesson students use the computer lab to learn about Lexile levels. Students use their MAP scores from the fall to find a book that is on their reading level. The students then have a month to read this book and fill out a Lotus that tells the important characteristics of the story.

The second lesson students watch Reading Rainbow book talks and book talks from previous school years. As a class we discuss what makes a good book talk. Students are given an index card and must write their book talk and get it approved. They have one week to complete their index card.

The Third lesson students work in groups of two or three to record their book talks. They are taught how to use the flip camera as well as how to delete recordings they do not like. They are given a permission form to fill out if they would like their book talk posted on the school website.

In the last lesson, students come to the computer lab to watch all the book talks from their class. They will out a review sheet telling their about their favorite book talks and why. They also write down what they liked about this project and what they learned.
Comments
The students not only learn about books, how to use flip cameras but also how to work in groups. The students come to understand how hard it is to create movies and most students love that we incorporate technology into the lesson.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Other teachers have used these book talks to promote books in their classroom. We will soon be showing them on the morning news and some are posted to the school website.
Follow-Up
In fifth grade students can become a member of the Flip for Reading Book club which meets once a month to learn about different genres and record book talks on those books.
