1) Classroom teacher introduces these facts about the moon by singing song, "The Earth Turns Around."
a. The moon reflects the sun’s light.
b. The moon rotates and revolves around the earth.
c. Different parts of the moon are show as it travels around the earth.
d. The phases of the moon happen from different amounts of light
reflected.

2) Students learn about the moon phases.
a. Teacher teaches the first verse of song. Tell students the tune is a
Japanese children’s song named “The Moon”.
b. Access website and classroom teacher will read about each phase
followed by the teaching of the appropriate verse that matches the phase. The 9 phases occur in this order: 1 = new moon; 2 = waxing crescent moon; 3 = first quarter moon; 4 = waxing gibbous moon; 5 = full moon; 6 = waning gibbous moon; 7 = third quarter moon; 8 = waning crescent moon; 9 = new moon.
c. Show Slides 7 & 8 and read info.
d. Have classroom teacher show moon phases book as 2nd repetition is played of the tape.
e. Have students try to recite story with tape the 3rd time.

3) Students create the moon phases by eating a moon pie. The teacer will use Flip video cameras to record students "eating the phases."
a. Looking at moon phases on website, begin with FULL MOON
b. Eat so that pie is like GIBBOUS MOON. Flip it over to show WAXING & WANING.
c.Eat so that pie is like QUARTER MOON. Flip it over to show FIRST & THIRD.
d.Eat so that pie is like CRESCENT MOON. Flip it over to show WAXING & WANING.
e.Show new moon. (nothing – can’t see)

4) Close with review of moon phases by watching the video of eating the phases.

I have taught this lesson for several years and kids love it!
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Chart the phases of the moon during a month and look for patterns. Read trade books about the moon phases. Re-create Van Gogh's Starry Night using a different moon phase.
Follow-Up
Read trade books about the moon phases. Draw the moon phases and label each phase.
