Planned By: Barbara Merritt
Original Author: Barbara Merritt, Scarborough
1. Watch a BrainPopJr. movie on seasons and another short clip so children can begin to understand what causes seasons.
2. Use Weather.com to find the time of sunrise and sunset in the town in New Zealand and in our town. Graph those times using Excel.
3. Using our Flip video camera, film the children telling about their school and their town.
4. Post the film on VoiceThread.
5. Respond to VoiceThread videos done by the class in New Zealand.
Comments
We have a district subscription to VoiceThread and owned all of the hardward needed so we did not need to buy anything.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Math is involved in this lesson in first calculating the hours of day and night then converthing that to minutes and entering it into an Excel spreadsheet. Social studies is involved in learning about children from another country. English/language arts is involved in creating the text to go along with the videos created.
Follow-Up
Review the movies to reinforce the concepts. Create a photo show using an online photo sharing program to share with students in New Zealand.
