School: Allendale Elementary School, Allendale, MI
Planned By: Danielle Suhy
Original Author: Danielle Suhy, Allendale
I would divide the class into groups and give each a camera. Then I would hand out a list of things they would be looking for that we had spent time on in previous classes. Younger groups could look for shapes, middle groups could look for things such as portraits, landscapes and interiors, and older groups could look for styles such as representational, abstract or non-objective art. I would let them loose in the school, or exhibit (if it were a field trip) and they would locate a piece of art representing each category. When they found one, they would elect a reporter for the group and film that person with the artwork, explaining why it fit that category. When all groups finish, I could compile them into a class newscast on shapes, or forms of art or styles of art. Then all students would see things from other groups' perspectives and be able to see a variety of artworks within one sitting.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Could be used also for animals in art, cultures, musical instruments in art, etc.
