Students will work on this lesson independently and in pairs. I will monitor progress and guide students through the process. This lesson was created for them to explore and discover the purpose of Public Service Announcements. Students will access my webpage where the webquest is located. Once there they will follow the instructions below:

Task 1
What is a PSA?
Visit the following sites to find out information on Public Service Announcements (PSA).

http://www.museum.tv/eotvsection.php?entrycode=publicservic

Task
2
What are the types of Public Service Announcements?
The American Heart Association uses PSA to inform people on the risks of heart disease. They know that in order to reach everybody they need to use several methods. Visit the site below to discover what types of public service announcements they use.

After
visiting the website complete the following questions:
1. What are the types of PSA?
2. Why would each method be effective.

Task 3
Visit the following site to see an example of a PSA. As you watch the video think about what message they are trying to get across. Who is their intended audience?

Task
4
PSA Audience
Public service announcements aim their message toward specific audiences. Not every person responds to the same kind of message. For example, teenagers would listen to a message from their favorite singer over a doctor. Take a look at the following website that is full of public service announcements and complete the following task:

http://www.flu.gov/video/psa/

1. For each target audience below find a video that is directed toward them.
2. List the title for the video.
3. Tell how the video appeals to a particular audience.

Task 5
Using Prezi create a print PSA. Your topic needs to be related to the story we are currently reading. Make sure you have your topic approved before starting on your Prezi.

Task 6
Join forces with another student in the class. As a team you will create your own video PSA. Use the same topic form Task 5. Remember to choose a targeted audience before beginning. Use the flipcams and have fun!
Comments
Thank you for taking the time to look at my lesson!
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students could connect this to science and create a PSA on environmental awareness. For social studies students could create their own version of a WWII propaganda PSA. In math students could create a PSA about the dangers of not knowing your multiplication tables.
Follow-Up
Students could view each others projects and write critiques.
