School: Auburn Elementary School, Riner, VA
Planned By: Melissa Kile
Original Author: Melissa Kile, Riner
Objectives:
Students will be able to demonstrate a verb.
Students will be able to record another student’s actions, leaving extra time at the beginning and end of the segment for editing.
Students will use MovieMaker or iMovie software to insert transitions between clips, to add titles and to manipulate the appearance of the titles.

Materials: Flip Video Camera, tripod, any materials needed by students to demonstrate their chosen verb

Procedure:
Students will have completed a unit on parts of speech, including verbs. During a class discussion, explain that they will each have the opportunity to demonstrate a favorite verb. Tell them that each of them should think of three or four verbs that they think they would like to demonstrate. Give each child a half-sheet of paper and direct them to write their names on the paper, and four verbs of their choice. Collect the papers.

In small groups over the next day or so, demonstrate how to use the Flip camera. Show the students:
• How to turn it on and off
• How to set the tripod up so it is stable
• How to start recording
• How to stop recording
• How to read the time on the screen so that the videographer records a long-enough segment (15 seconds)
• Remind the students that the final product will only have music on it—there will be no voices
• How to handle the camera if they are walking elsewhere in the school (I attach the wrist strap to an ID lanyard and shorten the lanyard so that a child can fit it over his/her head—the camera will be less likely to end up on the floor)

During appropriate times of the day, send pairs of students to demonstrate and record their verbs. If possible, check the video as soon as they return to the room to determine if there needs to be a “Take 2”.

Some verbs from the past: slide, sway, toss, jump, shake, sleep, open (a door), climb, run, bend (backbend)

After all students have been recorded, the teacher will import all videos into Windows MovieMaker software (or iMovie), and edit the clips for length and clarity.
The teacher will also add a title segment and a credit segment.

After editing is complete, invite each child to come to the computer with you and choose a transition between the previous clip and his/her clip. Allow the child to preview the clip with the transition. Then allow the child to choose a font, color, and “entrance” for their verb. Allow the child to preview the completed clip.

The teacher will add music (I used “Linus and Lucy” from The Charlie Brown Suite, Vince Guaraldi), and format the video for recording on DVDs. Make a DVD for each family and one for the classroom.
