School: Olive Vista Middle School, Sylmar, CA
Planned By: Brent Obillo
Original Author: Brent Obillo, Sylmar
-Students have prior lessons on the "launched model" of parabolas.
-In a whole group setting, record a student jumping in the air.
-Load the video into the laptop and project up, letting students find the launch time and landing time.
-Using the formula, students calculate the maximum height of the students, create the equation of their height vs time, and graph the function.
-Students take their Flip in groups and find parabolic paths in the real world and do the calculations in their own groups.
-Students share out their findings.
Comments
This can also be done with the dropped object model, but it's not as fun.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Do this with a PE class and shot puts, baseball, etc.
