LESSON SEQUENCE:

DAY 1
Establish the purpose and expectations for the lesson including alphabet review, letter sounds and essential vocabulary.
Train students how to use a flip video camera.
Do a practice session within the classroom. The teacher will model the language structure for beginners and more proficient students.
(Ex. Video a picture of a flag while the teacher says:

"Flag /f/ "f" "--script for a novice level student;
"This is a flag. Flag begins with the letter 'f'.' /f/ Flag."--script for a proficient student.)

Provide preprinted index cards with the language structure as each student practices videoing items within the classroom. Students will be assigned partners based on their proficiency level in both language and technology.

DAY 2
Whole Group--Students will brainstorm places within the school that correspond to letters of the alphabet. Several examples for each letter are encouraged. (Ex. Nurse's office for the letter N) Students will record ideas on the alphabet handout sheet focusing on initial sound correspondence for each letter of the alphabet.

DAY 3
Student partners and a parent volunteer will disperse themselves around the school and record places and objects as determined by yesterday’s activity.

*** Teacher and parent volunteers will download the videos to the iMovie program.

DAY 4
Whole Group--Students will watch the videos on the Smart Board and select segments to make a single product showcasing their knowledge of the alphabet, initial letter sounds, technology and expansion of their personal vocabulary for school and community.

DAY 5
Watch the final product together as a class. Students reflect on the whole activity and write an entry in their journals answering questions appropriate to their writing abilities.

"What is your opinion of the video?"
"What could we do to make the video better?"
"I like the video because________." OR
"I do not like the video because _______."

Comments
*****This would be an ideal activity for students and parents to do together on curriculum night or family night.
*****While designed for English Language Learners, the format and purpose of this lesson plan is readily adapted to other student populations.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The idea of a video book is easily adapted to other areas such as math, science and the arts.
ex. students video groups of objects in number sets
ex. students video the stages of plant growth to demonstrate a life cycle
ex. teacher will video the students describing the various types of medium used in their art projects
Follow-Up
My goal is to use this video throughout the year for alphabet and vocabulary review. I also envision having my students teach their parents how to use a flip video on curriculum night or family night.
