Keywords: Electromagnetic spectrum, color, light
Subject(s): Science
Grade 8
School: Carroll Co Intermediate School, Hillsville, VA
Planned By: Chris Stidom
Original Author: Chris Stidom, Hillsville
Objective: To introduce students to the electromagnetic spectrum and colors in the visible spectrum (“ROYGBIV”), in an interesting way using photography, technology, and the colors found in nature. This addresses Virginia physical science SOL 9. This project will demonstrate the value of integrated instruction by allowing the students to express themselves creatively in their choice of photographic subjects. They will also be practicing graphic arts by using digital and/or disposable cameras and color printers. Participants: 8th grade physical science students Procedure: The students will be put in 7 groups of approximately 3 students each. Each group will be assigned one color from the visible spectrum-red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Taking turns with the digital cameras, the students will try to photograph as many different shades of their assigned color as possible. The groups will start in the classroom, and then move outside to photograph “their” color, as it appears in nature or outside structures. They will stay on school property at all times. I will allow approximately 25-30 minutes for the “photography session.” Back in the classroom, the students will download and print their pictures. Then the students will create a “color wheel” by assembling their photographs, trimmed to size, in a large circle. After gluing the pictures to poster board, the project is complete and hopefully so is a better understanding of the visible spectrum and the artistry that is found in nature.
