1. Introduce the project to a pre-selected 3rd grade class. Divide the class into groups of two.
2. Students will discuss concerns they had as incoming 3rd graders this year at BIS. In column 1, the teacher will write key words down on the Smartboard for issues that the students discuss. In column 2, students will brainstorm what areas students should film. Students will make sure they are covering all areas from Column 1 in their filming list. The teacher will assist the students by guiding them to include all areas of the building that 3rd graders will be going to or moving through.
3. The teacher will pass out the Movie Storyboard worksheet and discuss the concept of a storyboard to the class. The first part of the worksheet includes an area for students to draw and write captions for 3 scenes they want to video tape. Students will ask staff members if they want to be on camera and would like to talk about their room and what students can expect in their classroom. They will also check to see if any student may not be videotaped in that classroom so they are not accidentally included in the video.
The second part includes a script that each group will write so they can narrate their video to include a description of what the 2nd graders are seeing in the video and reasons why they would be going to or through that area of the building. Students will be reminded to use proper spelling and grammar in their script.
4. The teacher will demonstrate and discuss the proper use and care of the Flip Video camera including the use of the strap, the power button, the record button, the play button, and the delete button. Half of the groups will be given a camera to practice filming each other. The other half will preplan their filming by completing the Movie Storyboard worksheet. After a reasonable amount of time, groups will switch so all students will have the opportunity to use the Flip Video cameras and complete the Video Storyboard worksheet.
5. Over several weeks, students will film their areas and the teacher will download the videos as each group is finished.
6. The teacher will edit the video for content and to confirm that all students that are filmed have signed videotaping forms from their parents.
7. Students open their video portion in Windows Moviemaker and will record their script to narrate their portion of the video.
8. The teacher will combine all video segments in Moviemaker and create a complete video for the 2nd graders to watch during the last two weeks of school.
Follow-Up
The 3rd grade students will watch the completed video and critique the video to look for great moments and areas that could have been improved.
New students that move into the building will also be able to view the video to help students and their families make an easier transition to a new school.
