School: Mize Elementary School, Lenexa, KS
Planned By: Cathy Hess
Original Author: Cathy Hess, Lenexa
Goal: Students will practice, review, and recall the sound that is symbolized by the letter of the week.
Day 1: Students will take a walking tour of the school and grounds looking for objects that look visually like the letter of the week. Students may need to problem solve, move, or add objects to create the letter they need. Day 2: Students will practice the movement for the letter of the week standardized by our district and brainstorm for other movements that incorporate that letter’s sound. For example: the letter P could have movements such as painting, pulling, pushing, piling things up, packing, pinching, or picking a flower.
Day 3: Students will return to the object found on Day 1 to videotape their movements beside that object. This is an ongoing activity that can be repeated with each letter of the alphabet as it is presented. Clips will be saved and can be reviewed by students during independent work time. Students can team with a class at another school to share alphabet clips digitally.
