Plant and Animal Cell Mystery
Case:
• Timothy Smith, a 36 year old male, wants to file a case against a man that beat him in an alley last Sunday, October 14th. He is unaware of his perpetrator because the crime was done around midnight and the scene was poorly lit. There are few hints that may lead to his culprit.
• Objective: Discover Timothy Smith’s offender with the clues collected of the crime scene and following information.
Crime Scene:
• Poorly lit alley behind “The Cat & Fiddle Pub”.
• Blood smears are found on the wall the scene.
A neighbor informed police that she saw a dog barking and chasing a hopping man around the same time in question.
• There were beer bottles and cigarette buds on the floor of the scene.
Information provided by Timothy Smith:
• His statement: “It was my friend’s birthday so a couple of friends and I went to a bar and had some drinks. I started to get light headed after a couple of bottles so I went to the back alley to catch some air. It was dark. I saw a dog and teenager who was carrying a jar with a pet tarantula and leaves from an unknown plant inside and the jar was closed with a cork lid. Then I heard a scream and the next thing I knew, a tall man was running towards me. I tried to run away and I bumped into the boy. The jar fell onto the ground. I woke up the next morning in that alley. I called the police as soon as I woke up. That was around 7 a.m.”
Evidence collected from the crime scene and mounted on a microscope slide:

Unknown slide #2
Unknown slide #3

Slide from the skin of Timothy Smith.

Procedure
You will be assigned to one of the light microscopes set up through the classroom.

View the slide though a high power objective, take a digital photograph and record the observations you see under that magnification into the Table 1 below.

Rotate through the 5 remaining workstations as they become free and record the observations. You should be able to recognize the type of cells seen in Unknown #1- #4 slides.

Attach your photograph to your digital lab report.

Questions:
Who do you believe is the criminal and why?

Summarize the differences between slides # 1-4.

How would microscopic identification help to solve this case?

Identify the following parts of a microscope.

What is the function of a stage clip?

What is the function of a light?

What is the function of an objective?

What is the total magnification when an object is viewed through a 40X objective?

Follow-Up
Learn the different parts of a microscope.
