Center Central

Center Central will be an after school program that will allow my high performing and low performing math students to work collaboratively to make pod-casts that will instruct students how to use the center that is assigned to them.

Each Center will include:
iPod
Pod-cast Directory on iPod
Center Materials

Center Central after school will be my student groups that will put together a directory of POD-CASTS to upload onto iPods for students to watch when they go to the center for instruction. This will allow for more advanced centers because the pod-casts will be a great resource for students that have questions because it will show step by step procedures on what to do at that center. (Generated by students... not me, which they like)

Having the students generate these pod-casts will not only make it more efficient but it allows time for students to work creatively and collaboratively to strengthen their mathematic skills. By having both low and high performing students working together in Center Central it provides an opportunity for student-to-student learning.

These pod-casts can also be used to upload on student home-pages to keep an online portfolio of their work.

Comments
I teach an a rural low performing school. This will alow students to have access to technology that they would not have other wise to prepare them for the 21 century.

Follow-Up
Extended:
In the classroom, center central will have their POD-CASTS uploaded on iPod nanos. Before engaging in the center activity students will watch the pod-cast for a step by step student based modeling instruction. Students will then have to complete the center activity. Not only do students have to complete the activity but students will also be instructed to keep a digital trail of how THEY completed the center. One student will be assigned as the "recorder." This student will then use the digital camera to take snap shots and record small clips of students working together. Every Friday they attend a media class where in their same center groups will use TOOL FACTORY editing software to edit their clips and movies to put it together to form a Pod-cast. I use the pod-casts as an assessment to see where students stand academically, as well as use them for future reference as an opening activity to get students excited about learning the new skill (with parent consent of course) Students will then upload their pod-casts to their TOOL FACTORY home-page for their online e-folio.

Extended:
Center Central will also help me in pod-casts for each lesson in our math series. Each pod-cast will include

- 1-2 minute attention grabber (poem, song, etc)
-10 Minute Teacher Instruction of skill
- 5-7 minutes student interaction (Q&A session, hands on activity etc)
- 5 Minute Review
- Math Book page references will scroll at the end a long with web enhanced activities for students to log onto for more instructional help.

These lesson pod-casts will help with students who are falling behind or are absent. Students will be able to check out iPods that will each have a POD-CAST directory uploaded onto them that they can reference. For my low performing students, this is a great way to "re-teach" without actually physically re-teaching. Students can watch their POD-CASTS in a hand held devise where they seem to be more engaged because of the tech world they are living in. Students who are absent will also be able to check out iPods to take home, so that they can catch up on what they missed.

Pod-casts will also be uploaded onto the class home-page for online viewing, but iPods will also be available for my students (majority) that don't have a computer or internet access.
