School: Enrico Fermi Sch Prfming Arts, Yonkers, NY
Planned By: Stacy Walther
Original Author: Stacy Walther, Yonkers
Delivery of Instruction:

Diagnostic Assessment:
The teacher will ask the students to describe what they do to get ready for school. The teacher will write students responses on the board.

Introduction of content:
The teacher will point out how what they said is a sequence. The teacher will show images of an event in sequential order next to the word sequence.

Modeling: The teacher will demonstrate how she is reading and asking questions as she is reading with the passage “Jane’s Sunflowers” displayed on the SMARTboard. Then the teacher will write down the items that happened and place the in sequential order using the anchor chart that has the sequencing words.

Application:
(Group Practice)
In heterogeneous groups, the students will work in groups to read and find items that occur in a sequence. The students will underline them just as the teacher did and will then use the graphic organizer to write the items in order using sequencing phrases. Formative Assessment: The teacher will confer with students and provide feedback. The groups will share what they wrote with the class.

(Independent practice)
Students will go to computers and/or laptops and go to www.kidsa-z.com. They will listen to and read an assigned book at their independent reading level. When reading the book, they will take notes of events occurring in a sequential order. Once they read the book, they will take a comprehension quiz. The students will then go to writinga-z and use the program to guide them in their development of writing and writing their own essay using sequencing phrases.

Summative Assessment/Closure:
The teacher will ask students to share what they wrote. The teacher will ask students, how does sequencing events help us understand what happened in a story? The teacher will review independent writing on writing a-z and provide independent feedback for students before the next lesson. The teacher will use the writing a-z independent assignment to guide instruction for the next lesson.
Comments
Providing my students with materials and technology that schools districts in higher socioeconomic areas will help my students to close the acheivement gap.

Students can use the sequencing phrases to explain scientific processes, events in social studies and explain how they solved math problems.
Follow-Up
