Keywords: Writing project using the Alphabet
Subject(s): English/Language Arts
Grades K through 5
School: Palos West Elementary School, Palos Park, IL
Planned By: Sharon Meldgin
Original Author: Sharon Meldgin, Palos Park
This can be done in any of the K-5 grade levels. Student are given the task to take a picture of something that starts with each letter of the alphabet. This project can either be done at home or school. The picture should hold some meaning for them. Some families take a field trip together for the day to take unique pictures from A-Z. Then they download the pictures at school and learn how to resize, crop, and adjust using Tool Factory Word Processor program. The pictures then are put into a photo show using various slideshow programs such as The Tool Factory Slide show. Each child must compose a sentence for each picture they have taken for the slide show using Tool Factory talking word processing program. Next, using a microphone the students read a descriptive sentence for each picture. In this part of the activity they are getting practice in writing, typing, and speaking into a microphone. The activity is burned to a CD and shown to any grade level from K-5.They also can share the CD at home with their families. This project can also be turned into a Podcast using Tool Factory Podcasting. This is fun for the K-1 grades who are learning the letters and sounds of the alphabet. For higher grade level assignments. The students write a 3-5 paragraph essay on how they developed their projects. Using a talking word processor helps those students who have difficulty writing and spelling. This in turn helps these students develop writing skills for state testing that is done every year. The students then display the project to various grade levels using the CD and their written explanation. The students can then have an open house and invite parents and families in to see their developed projects.
This is a fun but a challenging project.
