Keywords: rock cycle, digital presenter, document presenter, summarizing, artistic interpretation, visual simulations
Subject(s): Science, Technology
Grade 6
School: Southeast Middle School, Salisbury, NC
Planned By: Jill DeBord
Original Author: Jill DeBord, Salisbury
Activating Strategy: Talking Drawings --students will each be given a sheet of paper, folded into thirds the top section is the pre- lesson activtor. Students will be asked to draw the rock cycle- they probably don't know it already though some may know parts, or think they do. They should be given crayons or markers to do this to their best ability.

Cognitive Strategy: Set their talking drawings away and go into detail about the rock cycle- in my ideal class, this would be shown on the digital video presenter through computer animation - classzone.com has a fantastic one! Handouts on what the rock cycle is and how it works based on McDougall Littel's Grade 6 Science Textbook Chapter 3A would be discussed after students partner read through the information.

Summarizing Strategy: Finally, students will complete their rock cycle talking drawing in the middle third of the paper. On the bottom third, they will describe what the rock cycle is in their own words. Students who are willing could- again in my ideal classroom- present their talking drawings on a document presenter (camera) and explain their new understanding of the cycle.
Comments
There are packages out there that also include a DVD/ VCR combo and cables and mounting items to complete this need.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Covers Technology curriculum goals and objectives for our state, NC, as well
Follow-Up
As students further their understanding of various rock types, the animation could be revisited to identify where they come from and where they go.
