Subject(s): Science, Technology
Grades 6 through 12
School: Milford Grade School, Milford, IL
Planned By: K. Van Hoveln
Original Author: K. Van Hoveln, Milford
Introduction: "What is gas?" Matter with no definite shape or volume. "Is it possible to control the production of gas?"
Lesson: When I mix 20mL of vinegar, 2 drops of soap, and 1/4 tsp of baking soda it causes the production of gas but the gas over flows within the graduated cylinder. Today you are going to document through the video camera the process of your group trying to control the production of gas.
Once your group has been successful with the experiment then you need to edit your video, add text (names, title, etc.),and then you can email me your video and you will have turned in your lab.

Right now my classes only have access to ONE digital video camera. I have my students do their labs and one group is the "In the Spotlight" group for the week. They are the group that records their lab and turns in a digital copy of the lab report via a Microsoft Movie Maker. So far, it has worked with the one camera. This idea and concept would be more efficient and meet our needs better if there were enough cameras and computers for each group to accomplish the task.
Comments
This lab/acitivity is great for learning different (LD)students or students that have handwriting difficulties. I find that I get all students participating in the lab because they know they are being "watched".
The lab "Production of Gas" was modified from the American Chemical Society.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Link this to math because students can create charts and or graphs to document their findings.
Follow-Up
We watch the videos and compare and contrast similarities between different groups answers. It allows students to really observe others doing science!
