School: Excel Christian School, Sparks, NV
Planned By: Jonah Ferrin
Original Author: Jonah Ferrin, Sparks
Objective: Students will explore the solar system via virtual reality and be able to verbally say one attribute of each planet.

Anticipatory Set: Two days ago we blasted off into space using our VR glasses. Yesterday we were able to do a spacewalk around the earth and saw the international space station. Today we are going to check out all the planets in the solar system.

Direct Instruction:
1. Ask students to put on the VR glasses to take a trip into space and explore the different planets of the solar system.
2. Remind students that planets have different attributes. They will need to pay attention to things such as size, shape, color, moons, and distance from the sun.

Guided Practice: Students will put on the glasses and watch as the app shows them the different planets. Students will be able to interact with the planets as they see them show up no the screen.

Closure: I hope that you have enjoyed viewing the different planets in our solar system and have an understanding of our planet.

Independent Practice: Students will create a report about a planet after they have done more research using their smartphones, tablets, computer and encyclopedias.

Required materials: Smartphones, VR headsets, Titan of Space cardboard app.

Assessment: Large groups discussion where students will verbally share one attribute about the planet.
Comments
I would like funding for Samsung J7 smartphones to use in my classroom. The phones would allow us to do more than just look at space. We would be able to research in all other subjects. There is a plethora of education apps available to increase students learning.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Language Arts and Writing: Students will create a report about one of the planets.
Math: Students will be able to distinguish different sizes of planets.
Art: Students will create a model of the planets.
Music: Student swill sing a song about each one of the planets.
Follow-Up
Students will present their information to Kindergarten and 6th grade students. Their final project will be to present their knowledge to parents during parent night.
Materials: Science, Elementary
Other Items: 5 Samsung Galaxy J7, $150 each, total of $750.00
