HYDROPONICS - Growing potato plants in water.
1. Each student receives a mason jar, potato, & 4 toothpicks.
2. Student puts the 4 toothpicks in the potato to suspend the potato in the jar.
3. Student fills the jar with enough water to cover 1/2" of the bottom of the potato.
4. Students photograph each other with their hydroponic experiments to document the start of the lab.
5. Each student records the date, procedure and draws what his/her potato in a jar looks like at the start of the experiment in his/her lab book.
6. All jars are placed in a sunny window & under a plant light at night.
7. Growth of the plants is recorded periodically in each student's log book.
8. Photos are taken periodically also.
9. Potatoes are transplanted into pots with soil when they reach 6" -12" in height.
10. Potatoes can be harvested from the soil 2 weeks after flowers appear on the plants.
11. Final crop of potatoes is photographed when harvested.
12. Potatoes can then be used in a food recipe to share with the class (potato salad, potato fries, potato pancakes, etc.)

Comments
I begin this experiment on the very first day of school. Our potato plants grow in the classroom until well after Christmas vacation. We usually have three harvest times when we dig in the soil to find baby potatoes. It is a very interesting and exciting long term project for 2nd graders, plus our classroom always looks green, growing, and changing.
