Why I need this:
Improving Math through application, accountability and mastery.
I have been incredibly impressed with the progress students have made this year using chromebooks at home. Sites like Khan Academy have allowed students to receive remediation at home, explore new topics on their own and streamline grading so more time can be spent on planning and learning. For the upcoming year I want to offer this tool to electives like wood shop and home economics so math can be more closely tied with application. I am theorizing that by adding a math component to these classes using videos, notes and assessments we can bring math off the paper and into the real world. Because these teachers are not certified in mathematics I am building lessons that require minimal to no effort from the teacher and can be received entirely on the computer. At the completion of the semester I will compare test scores to see if students who received integrated math in their electives score higher on end of course exams. I think this could improve funding for electives and allow more avenues for success for students that are not inclined to attend college. On the bigger picture, depending upon the success of the program I would like to consider policy changes that would allow electives using this math integration to obtain a partial math credit. |
