¡Las Vacaciones de primavera en España!

It’s spring break and you get to spend it in one of the most interesting places on the planet – Spain! You will fly into Madrid and then visit at least four cities. You’ll take the taxi to your hotel in Madrid but after that you will need to take the train to get around the country. Traveling by train allows you to see the countryside first hand as well as meet other Spaniards. It also allows you to use your growing knowledge of Spanish. Once in the cities you will want to visit the important sites and have some fun.

The task:

On the attached pages you will fill in each day’s travel itinerary, what you will visit (at least 2 tourist sites for each day), and your reflection. Use your imagination and write about what you would think and feel if you were there.

THIS MUST BE DONE IN SPANISH! The tourist sites should use ir + infinitive (Vamos a ver…). The reflection is to be written as if it were the end of that day and you are reflecting on what you did. It should be in preterite.

If you would like to stay in a city more than a day, that is OK, but you need to visit at least 4 cities including Madrid.

You must also send me an electronic post card in Spanish from one of the cities you visit. You can do this from the left side of the tourism web site below. Send it to [email protected]

The process:

1. Visit www.spain.info . Click on “destinations” on the far left. Then click on “great urban destinations” in the middle. Pick the city you are visiting and find at least 2 places you want to visit. Write them on the “vamos a visitar” lines. You can visit any cities you want, but the seven you will find here are great ones and have tourist info right here.

2. Visit www.renfe.es. This is the Spanish national railway site. This will help you determine your travel plans. Remember to take into account how long the travel takes. If you spend lots of time on the train, you will have less time for sightseeing. For each day you should write down where you are starting from, your destination and the time of departure and arrival. YOU MUST USE THE TRAIN WEB SITE IN SPANISH!

Helpful hints:

Military time – if a time is greater than 12:00, subtract 12 hours and you’ll have what pm time it is. 13:05 = 1:05 pm.
Most of the world does the day first then the month. 07-03-2005 = 7th of March, 2005.
L = lunes, M = martes, X = miércoles, J = jueves, V = viernes, S = sábado, D = domingo

Purpose: to plan and experience a virtual spring break in Spain. Standards of Foreign Language Learning: 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4.2, 5.1.

Objectives: by the end of class, students

1. will have written a complete plan for train travel and sightseeing in at least 4 cities in Spain
2. will have written reflections in past tense on each day’s virtual experience
3. will have visited and interpreted information from the Spanish national train website and at least one tourism web site.

Materials: internet access for 11 pairs of students, instruction sheet, worksheet, map in textbbook

Procedure: time

1. Business – attendance 2

2. Review the instructions, give vocabulary 5

2. Follow the instructions on the work sheet, turn in at the end. Be sure 58
students are using the train website in Spanish



Total time: 65 minutes


Assessments: Students must turn in worksheets at the end of class. Teacher will note errors and return them.
Comments
This lesson would be fantastic for students if they had the opportunity to sit at their seat and take a trip to Spain on an iPad. As it currently stands, to be able to complete this lesson teachers must book a computer lab well in advance. If the labs are booked, it is not possible to do the lesson.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students could also include a historical component. They could search a historical fact about each city they visit.
Follow-Up
Have students discuss what they did, using past tense.
