Personal Information:
About Me:
I live in the Metro-Detroit area with my family. My husband, Jason is a police sergeant detective. We’ve been married for ten years now. We enjoy spending time with our family, traveling and enjoying the good things in life! I have two great little guys too! My oldest son, Marshall, is 8 years old and loves to build Lego robots and draw. My other son, Nolan, is 7 years old and is into Transformers and Legos. Yes, Legos can be found in all parts of our house – the floors, counters and tables, on the couch, under the couch and in the couch – they’re even in the bathtub!
College and Degrees:
I really like going to school. I’ve been taking college classes since 1987! Fortunately, I have been able to wrap those classes up into a few degrees. I received a B.S. in elementary special education in 1992 and a M.A. in early childhood education in 1995 both from Eastern Michigan University. I took a few courses in infant mental health and special education from Wayne State University prior to being accepted into a doctoral program at Oakland University in 2002. I have since completed my coursework for a Ph.D. in early childhood education and will soon be taking qualifying exams and beginning work on my dissertation. I was able to take courses in the reading department at Oakland as part of my cognate and earned a Post-Graduate Certificate in Reading, Language Arts and Literature in 2004. Whew! I think I’ve earned something like 260 college credits! I don’t even want to know how much that cost me! A really awesome thing I got to do as part of my doctoral program was to travel to Reggio Emilia, Italy for a study tour of their renowned early childhood educational programs.
Favorite Books:
No, David, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Owl Babies...so many great children's books to love! I filled all the walls and even the ceiling of the boys' room when they were babies with paintings I did of characters from all my favorites children's books. I cried when I had to paint over them when they outgrew having The Runaway Bunny in their room!
Favorite Quotes:
Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much!
Interests:
Spending time with family, reading, technology (my husband calls me a "computer nerd"...but I love my laptop and the Internet!), watching television (House, CSI, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Survivorman, Mythbusters, Made in America, documentaries, science shows) going to museums, and travelling.
Employment History:
I have been working with children for over 18 years in various educational and recreational settings. The majority of the years have been spent teaching young children under the age of five. Currently, I teach in an elementary school as a K-2 special education teacher. I also teach graduate classes in reading and language arts for Central Michigan University and early childhood education for the University of Phoenix.
Why Do I Teach?:
There are so many things I love about being a teacher especially seeing the children grow and learn.
