Our fifth grade class has been podcasting since Spring 2007. We have created episodes covering a variety of content, from live recordings of students sharing their creative writing, to shows that highlight our conversations with ham radio operators traveling on vacation and checking in daily to share their travelog with the class.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
We have basic podcasting tools to produce shows, with the teacher as recording and editing specialist. We need additional tools to enable the students to record on their own "in the field" as well as in the classroom, then to edit their work and create published podcasting episodes. Presently, all of this takes place on the teacher's laptop.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a teacher who loves to integrate the use of technology tools in my teaching. As a ham radio operator, I am familiar with "on air" communication. Podcasting has been a natural extension of this hobby, and it has enabled me to involve students in publishing their own work for authentic audiences.
College and Degrees:
I graduated from a small teacher's college, Concordia University, in River Forest , Illinois. Later, I earned a Master's Degree from Stetson University in Deland, Florida.
Activities:
I am involved actively in podcasting, video podcasting, ham radio, and the use of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) communications both personally and professionally in the classroom. I tend to look at anything to do with communications technology in the classroom or personally and am always seeking new ways to use technology tools to make my life or my teaching better.
Favorite Quotes:
Learning is about questions, not answers.
Interests:
Computers, ham radio, podcasting, reading novels.
Why Do I Teach?:
I love kids! I love to see the excitement on their faces when they learn and discover new things. Lately, I've especially enjoyed seeing them share their knowledge, excitement, and ideas with an authentic audience through podcasting.
