Thurgood Marshall High School
Class Information:
Room Number: U 112
Students per Class: 14
Class Description:
This is a new program at our school. Photojournalism is the study of picture taking and story telling. We teach photo composition, digital editing, cutline writing, professional presentation, magazine and newspaper layout.
Position:
Photojournalism
Needs:
We desperately need cameras for our students - currently we have zero. We are a minority campus and our funding is limited. Some students are able to purchase their own camera for use, but we need a class set for instruction. We have support for computers and software, but our photo-specific equipment is lacking.
My Philosophy:
I want to teach students how to take the disciplines of film photography and apply them to a digital world. We will learn film processes to understand the importance of composition, lighting and color. This will improve the quality of our digital photos as well.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I started teaching this year after three years in the newspaper business (reporting and photography) and 4 years in the television and video production business.
College and Degrees:
I have a bachelors degree in Journalism and English from Texas A&M University.
Activities:
I still take photos in my free time and photography will always be a part of my life.
Favorite Books:
I have far too many favorites to list here, but I always enjoy Dennis Lehane, Issac Asimov, Nelson DeMille and Ken Follett.
Favorite Quotes:
A picture is worth a thousand words or as the original chinese proverb describes, "A picture's meaning can express ten thousand words."
Employment History:
KBTX-TV (Bryan, TX) Frame by Frame (College Station, TX) 1960 Sun (Spring, TX) Baytown Sun (Baytown, TX)
Why Do I Teach?:
I am really enjoying teaching photojournalism. I always enjoyed working in the business and my teaching style is more of a training method. I try to make this real for the students. As many hands on lessons as we can get.
