Philadelphia PA

Room Number: 2037
Students per Class: 28
Class Description:
9th Grade Physical Science (including Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science. 11th-12thGrade Chemistry (for non-science majors)
Position:
Science teacher
Needs:
Hand-held input devices for a class of 28 students. I've looked at low end, hand held white board paddles and high end, RF "clickers" that would direct student input to my computer and multimedia projector for instant feedback and further classroom discussions.
My Philosophy:
I teach science because I love science. I have taught for 17 years, and for 20 years I also developed interactive science software. My philosophy is that school is interactive. Students need to be actively involved in their own learning. I teach through inquiry and through hands on labs. I am looking for additional devices that would allow me to transform 'lecture' mode in 'interactive-student-learning'mode.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have a love of science that I have managed to share with my two daughters and with a number of students. At 57 years old, I am unusual that I have worked with technology throughout my careers, as a teacher, software developer, Computer Center director, educational consultant, and now again as a teacher.

BS in Humanities and Social Sciences, with minors in Biology and Chemistry, from Drexel University, Phila PA 1973. BS in Geology from U of Delaware, 1988 MS in Computer-based Education, with a minor in Computer Science, from U of Delaware, 1989 Enrolled, currently, part-time, in a doctoral program at Western CT State U for Instructional Leadership
Activities:
I am involved in judging science fairs, at local, city, regional, and state levels. I encourage and mentor my students to challenge themselves by entering these competitions.
Favorite Books:
I enjoy non-fiction that is science oriented - On Origin of Species by Dawkins; all of Carl Sagan's, Isaac Asimov's, and Stephen Jay Gould's books; in fiction, I have read hundreds of mystery, espionage thrillers, and science fiction books.
Favorite Quotes:
"A skeptic says, 'I don't know. I'm going to find out.' A cynic says, "I already know. I don't need to find out.'" Thomas L. Friedman, author of The World Is Flat.
Interests:
Reading, cycling, walking
Employment History:
Teaching Science (1973-1981) Developingeducational software, as a programmer, instructional designer, and project manager (1978-1988) Directingcomputer centers at universities (1988-2001) Consultingwith California Community College system on educational technology (2001-2002) TeachingScience (2002-present)
Why Do I Teach?:
Even the years I wasn't teaching in a classroom, I was still teaching - either by developing software or mentoring faculty on how to incorporate technology into their teaching styles. My whole working career of 35 years has been spent in teaching. I teach because I love to share my knowledge with others and I want to see that love of science kindle in another's soul. That only comes by "walking the walk and talking the talk" authentically and sincerely to students.
