Champion High School
Hometown:
champion, ohio
Class Information:
Room Number: 8
Students per Class: 120
Class Description:
A typical "old school" arrangement of student desks and wooden floors. Our school is not air conditioned but my students are eager learners even in the hottest room in the building. There is a lab next door to my room that only my students use and it is equipped with the basics that we are attempting to update to include computer labs to run sensors and PHYSLETS programs. Our future hopes are to build a greenhouse outside of the school to serve as an "alternative fuel station" for the study of solar power, biomass and biodiesel production.
Position:
physic teacher
Needs:
Our most pressing need is for a dedicated room of computers to bring our physics and chemistry instuction into the 21st century. It seems that a laptop cart with 10-12 laptops would be the best and most economical solution. This would allow for more Microcomputer Based Labs (MBL) and for the use of software like Scientific Notebook and PHYSLETS.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a married father of three who is involved in the lives of my children and in the lives of my students. I am one of a very few teachers who actually meets with students outside of school. All of my students know where I live and many of them have come to visit me or come to help me do work on my small farm. Most years - my Physics class ends with "Astronomy Camp" where we meet at sundown at my property and borrow the university's telescope to observe the night sky and cook out over a bonfire. For me teaching is not just a job - it's an adventure (one that is being increasingly choked out by the undergrowth of over-management and under-funding)
College and Degrees:
I am a graduate of Kent State University where I earned my Bachelors degree in Biological Science and my Masters degree in Education.
Activities:
I am the advisor for Champion's Science Club and the Ski Club. I also coach both Cross Country and Track. In the evenings when I am not fighting crime as a superhero I work as the science coordinator for Kent States tutoring center.
Favorite Books:
My favorite fiction book is Stephen Donaldson's "Chronicles of Thomas Covenant". My favorite non-fiction (other than Hewitt's "Conceptual Phyics") is Isaac Asimov's "On Numbers".
Favorite Quotes:
Of course - Louis Pastuer's "Chance favors the prepared mind"
Interests:
I am interested in EVERYTHING - especially science. I collect old books, old tools and old farm equipment.
Employment History:
I have worked on a milk farm (as a youth) and as a medic in the US Army. I have worked in a steel mill and as a bartender. I have been an industrial painter and a maintenance worker. In college I was a tutor (I still am) and now I teach full time at a public high school.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach beacause one of the greatest joys in my life is helping people understand something that they don't.
