Vine Street Elementary School
Hometown:
Boston, Ma.
Class Information:
Room Number: 27
Students per Class: 24
Class Description:
I teach 2nd grade to a class of 20 students. My children are predominantly Hispanic, with a couple Asian and Pacific Islanders. More than half of my students are English Language Learners. They come from hard working families who live in apartments in the middle of an urban Hollywood neighborhood. My students are happy and eager to learn, and they approach each day with the sense of excitement and wonder only a young child can possess.
Position:
teacher
Needs:
As part of a large, urban school district, funding is always an issue. This year in particular we find ourselves handicapped by budget cuts and economic downturns. At the same time we want to give our kids all the opportunities and resources available to children in wealthier schools and neighborhoods. Add to that the fact that these children are "digital natives" who have been raised on video games and instantaneous access to information, and the need for educational technology is apparent. I need to be able to use the most up to date resources available to present lessons which will engage and involve my students, while preparing them for an ever evolving digital world. These kids will grow up in the 21st century. I need to help prepare them for that world using 21st century tools.
My Philosophy:
I believe that all children can learn. They all have ideas, experiences, and intelligences that they bring to the classroom. it is the role of the teacher to meet the children where they arrive, and take them as far in learning and growing as he possible can. Nothing replaces good solid teaching and a skilled teacher could teach a child to read by drawing letters in the sand. However, there are more and more remarkable resources available very day, and we should not be afraid to use them. We owe it to our children to provide them with all the tools we can--tools that will help to prepare them for a world in which technology will become more and more prevalent. We teach to help children learn and grow. It is vital that we as teachers continue to learn and grow with them.
