Fairview High School
Hometown:
Cullman
Class Information:
Room Number: Library Media C
Students per Class: 500
Class Description:
Students use the 13 available computer stations to complete class assignments and projects. All but 2 of our computers are over 7 years old. All have updated memory and additional components to keep them operating as efficienty as possible. The only other computer "lab" for students to use, has computer classes in it every period but the teacher's planning time. Therefore, the library's technology is heavily used by students to complete their assignments. We have organized a library classroom area that has a laptop, a data projector, VHS/DVD player, scanner, and 2 digital cameras that teachers/studentsmay use.
Position:
Media Specialist
Needs:
USEAGE & ACCESS: 1) Need to continue to update the computers, or purchase newer, ones that meet our district's technology guidelines. 2) Need to provide laptops so that students can check them out from the library for those who have no computer at home. 3) Need to obtain 2 document cameras, one for the library's classroom and 1 that can circulate to classrooms. 4) Need to obtain a networked heavy duty color laser printer with a print port or software to handle and manage the student printing needs in order to keep from wasting paper and especially toner supplies. 5)Fundingfor paper and toner supplies--a major concern and problem since the state nor county school systems have listed them as a budgeted expense! We therefore cannot use state or district funds to purchase these essential supplies, but have to hold local school fundraisers or pay for them out of our own personal finances!!! 6) Our print collection's average age is 1982, which means the overwhelming majority of our book collection is not current. Our limited funding has to be splintered to meet our needs for technology and keeping it current since it is the most heavily used resource we loan so there is very little left over (25% of the budget to be exact) to spend on updating our print collection. This makes it very difficult to make a significate change in our collection of print resources: fiction, nonfiction and reference. Technology is expensive but so are books! We would appreciate any donation of funds to assist us with updating our print collections.
