Hart Magnet Elementary School
Hometown:
New York
Class Information:
Room Number: 146
Students per Class: 435
Class Description:
All of the students at Hart school use the art room, and have art classes. We use all of the main traditional materials every year. We study art through the elements of art: line, shape, color, form, texture and value. We examine the art of a variety of cultures and artists. In collaboration with the technology teacher my students learn how to use digital cameras, and in conjunction with the music teacher my students learn about theatre and performing.
Position:
art teacher
Needs:
We would like to add digital performance media to the competencies that we teach. We have two computer labs and three committed teachers we believe that this is something we can do with our fourth and fifth graders. Acquiring the ability to tell their own stories in digital media will help our students become active creators which is an antidote to being passive consumers of digital media.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been teaching for 14 years and a practicing artist most of my life. I have shown my work in galleries on the east and west coasts. I have an undergraduate degree from UNC-Greensboro in Sculpture and Photography and a Masters in Art Education from Teachers College Columbia University. I worked for other artists for many years before deciding to become an art teacher. My favorite materials are clay and wax, but I also love to draw.
Interests:
In addition to my art making interests I also ride my bicycle and roller blade most weekends with my husband.
Employment History:
Before I became an art teacher 15 years ago I worked for many different artists.
Why Do I Teach?:
I think that teaching is one of the more creative things that I do, I became interested in children when I became older, but I had always been interested in how people learn. I feel that the arts add an important dimension to education, and hope that my students find out new things about themselves and their talents through exploring the arts.
