Advanced Science and Technology Education Charter (ASTEC)
Hometown:
Wichita
Class Information:
Room Number: 15
Students per Class: 30+
Class Description:
During the school day, I am a Co-Teacher for all subjects. I also teach a 7th Grade Leadership Class which has been going exceptionally well. After school, I am the director for drama. We are trying to start a drama group that will put on two plays or musicals a year. In December we will perform our first, "Hello, Shakespeare." In the spring it will be "A Midsummer's Night Dream." The kids are very excited to have this outlet in their life. Many are at-risk students that need something positive to turn to instead of the alternatives such as gangs and drugs. That is why we feel strongly about gathering materials for the program. They need materials they can be trusted with, materials that are specifically for them to use. We have found that kids thrive when given an outlet. We have had several kids join that otherwise would have been on the street after school!
Position:
Co-Teacher/Drama
Needs:
We need a digital lab, where we can have students in charge of photographing all aspects of drama and hopefully that will branch off into a newspaper/yearbookclass also. Really we need a lot of materials to make this the best we can. There are so many things that these kids have never worked with and have never been entrusted with, they just need someone to believe that they can do it. The ESL kits would benefit us to know end. We have many students who do not have English as their first language and struggle academically because of this. I believe that if they were given some better tools, that we would see amazing results. At this time we do not have an ELL program and this is where this kit would be used!
