Thunderridge High School
Hometown:
Centennial, CO
Class Information:
Room Number: E-102
Students per Class: 147
Class Description:
I teach the English side of a two person team for 11th and 10th grade humanities. The humanities block focuses on the liberal arts which includes such subject areas as literature, history, philosophy, art, music, public speaking, world religions, foriegn languages, and even technology.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
I really need a set of 30 classroom laptops or 30 desktop set-ups. We have 3 sets of mobile carts in our school and only one computer lab that teachers can sign out for our entire building. With almost 100 teachers and over 1600 students needed access to computers on a daily basis, I am only allowed to use these resources three days per month! Due to budget contraints we cannot make any copies, have no textbook for English, and I only have two really old Apple computers in my room. This makes teaching in the 21st century nearly impossible. The difference between access to technology and not is night and day in terms of student final products, student learning, research skills, critical thinking, and general classroom outcomes.
My Philosophy:
My teaching philosophy follows along with our district goals to focus on 21st century learning. Basically, the focus is on critical thinking, analytical thinking, technology, and responsible citizenship. I utilize hands-on lessons in a student workshop model. This works by providing students with instructions on particular activities or projects for the day where the students then are given ample time to work. As they work, I meet with groups or individuals in a coaching format to help all kids reach specific learning goals. The class focuses primarily on various academic and real world skills with each student obtaining variable content based on their learning choices.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been teaching for a decade now and have seen great changes forming within public education. I work with various committees here at school in order to help obtain equipment and training for all teachers to increase technology use within the classrooms. As I find many classrooms resembling the style and methods of education from the early 1900's, I find it my calling to help update the system to actually meet the needs of the public.
College and Degrees:
I went to Miami University (the original in Ohio) for an undergraduate degree in Communications Education. I then pursued a Master's degree from American Intercontinental University in Educational Technology. Currently, I am finishing a certification degree for Principal's Licensing.
Activities:
Biggest pursuits are skiing and now snowboarding within several resorts in the Colorado Rockies.
Favorite Books:
The Things They Carried, 1984, Night,
Employment History:
Six years teaching in inner-city Atlanta, GA. Two years teaching in lower-income suburban area Aurora, CO. Two years teaching in higher-income surburban area Highlands Ranch, CO.
Why Do I Teach?:
I started in teaching to directly help those students who would need me the most. This is why I chose to work in an area in the country where there was this high student need. As I have gone on in my career, I have found that I can only affect so many students per year, so I have helped expand my techniques to other teachers to affect more benefits for students overall. Within these hard economic times, I now find myself having to not only help spread tactics and teaching techniques in regards to technology, but actually securing the equipment to use.
